More than a Century of Refined Vehicles
Few car companies in business today can brag about being around for more than 100 years, but Buick goes even further and is actually the oldest US car company still making excellent vehicles. Founded initially in 1899 as the Buick Auto-Vim and Power Company, they made their first vehicle that very year. They found early success in making engines, and there was internal disagreement on whether to stay the course with this focus or start making full vehicles to sell. Eventually, the owner saw the potential for making automobiles, changed the business name to Buick Motor Company, and built 37 vehicles in 1904. That might have been a slow start, but they made 750 the following year, then 1,400 in 1906, and nearly 9,000 vehicles in 1908, making them the largest automobile manufacturer in the world at that time.
The major shift in mass production occurred as a result of a man named William C. Durant coming in as an investor in 1904. Durant went on to start General Motors a few years later and brought Buick in as part of the foundation of his new company. In the early GM lineup, Chevy was positioned as the starting option, with Cadillac as the top-end model, and Buick slotted just below that as a sophisticated and luxurious option for discerning drivers. With its early success and new place as a part of GM, Buick established itself as a prestigious car company in the US and throughout other parts of the world, with impressive power and performance from engines found in models like the Buick Master Six.
Following World War II, Buick reigned as one of the top brands in the US, creating iconic vehicles that set the visual tone for what cars looked like throughout the late 1940s, 1950s, and beyond.
